Lower alcohol wines

Wine is very nice, of course, but all the nutrition advisers (come guilt producers) warn of the calorie content.  I am normally a Chardonnay girl.

I did a bit of fossicking around and discovered that different styles of wine have different levels of alcohol.  So by picking the right sort of wine you can save just that little extra bit of energy intake.  And that will add up over time to pounds and pounds not put on.

So here is a list of wines that are said to be better in terms of lower alcohol  content:

Riesling – German style
Semillon
Zinfandel
Sauvignon blanc
Prosecco and other light sparkling wines
Pinot noir
Pinot gris
Cabernet franc
Cabernet sauvignon
Chardonnay
Vouvray
Syrah

But be warned, the alcohol percentage can fluctuate quite widely between wines of the same style.  I have found a 10% chardonnay (luckily) but also a 13.5% pinot gris!  The other thing to be aware of is that although Riesling's are definitely lower alcohol, they do have higher residual sugars which is why they taste a bit sweeter than some other wines.

There is a NZ label Bella which specially produces low alcohol wines but I haven’t tried it.

From now on I’m going to check the alcohol percentage on the labels and try to buy wines with closer to 10% rather than 14% alcohol content.
