Great Barrier 

Great Barrier (or “The Barrier”) is about 100 kilometres from Auckland but is very different.  It is the 6^th largest island.  The west coast is sheltered and the east coast which is  exposed to the Pacific is more windswept.

There are not many permanent residents.  I understand that the facilities for visitors are somewhat on the basic side but that the natural environment (and cheap crayfish meals) more than make up for that.
