The Scholar by Dervla McTiernan

The Scholar is the second book in a series.  I posted about the first one here. I enjoyed it despite some gruesome scenes but felt that the level of coincidence was a bit extreme.

The detective is Cormac Reilly and a lot of the action concerns his partner Emma Sweeney who is a scientist. There are a myriad of twists and turns.  One interesting feature is the way that the detective finds his approach as a policeman runs counter to providing complete support to his partner  - who is implicated in the events.
