I hope this Foodie Friday doesn't gross you out. In the 18th century wealthy people
ate Turtle soup – made from real turtles.
Thankfully this tradition barely survives today.
But a cheaper version of the soup was invented called
Mock Turtle Soup – it was made from calve's heads which apparently tasted
somewhat similar to the turtle – particularly with the inclusion of some
oysters or oyster juice. Campbells even
made a canned version!
Mock Turtle is also a character from Alice in
Wonderland.
