ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how food can bring back such memories!! I shared a recipe for chicken croquettes. I loved eating them as a child and now have a fabulous "grown up" recipe that I make.
ReplyDeleteMy eating menu has changed a lot since I was young. I found out just how much last year when I was helping my parents through my fathers illness. I still love meringue cookies and rice pudding and bread pudding. Oh now I want bread pudding to eat during the snow storm we are supposed to get overnight.

ReplyDeleteMy mother used Italian sausage in the dish I posted, but it really tastes better with British sausage. It's probably available now, but it wasn't back then (in the USA). The recipe for the savoury suet pudding really took me back. I love them!!! And all the savoury pies too like Steak & Ale and Steak & Kidney.

ReplyDeleteI've entered three recipes, because I couldn't choose between them! The first is Swiss Eggs, which I can remember my Mum making for us for lunch during school holidays. They were (and still are!) a real treat. The second is Braised Oxtail, which I can remember my Mum swearing over (because picking the meat from the bones is a real labour of love), when I began swearing over doing the same job! lol Lastly is Buttermilk Chicken & Bacon, which is one of those recipes that just brings back memories with its flavours. For me, I can see us all sat around the table for a weekday evening meal, eating the succulent chicken with mashed potato and vegetables, whilst chatting about our days. Fab. :)

ReplyDeleteI've been visiting Shirl's since it opened on Washington St in Waukegan IL about 60 years ago. Here's an authentic Grub recipe: Season with Salt & Pepper and Brown 1# of ground chuck and 1/3# of ground pork, drain most of the fat - not all. Reduce heat and throw in 1 or two minced garlic cloves, stir for a minute, don't burn the garlic. Add 1 packet of Onion Soup Mix, stir. Then I run it through a food processor to make it fine (authentic, but not necessary). Now add 1/3 cup of beef consomme and 3/4 cup of tomato juice, simmer and reduce, you want it like sloppy joes not dry. Add more pepper and tomato juice if necessary - enjoy it on its own or with cheese sauce. Note: Montreal Steak Seasoning is on the spicy hot side - Grub Burgers are NoT.
