You get to Sailor's
Grave via Sailor's Grave Road on Pumpkin Hill. If you are driving from
Auckland it'll take you about an hour and a half. It's on the Coromandel Peninsula.
There is a little memorial there surrounded by a white
picket fence. In 1842 an English sailor
drowned there in the surf. He was only
22. This was just 2 years after the
Treaty of Waitangi. The memorial is
maintained by the Navy.
The name of the bay is Te Karo. It is popular with
surfers.
