Christmas Carols – What's Your Favourite?

I found it surprisingly difficult to pick my favourite Christmas Carol.  There were a number of strong contenders.

Silent Night – calm and serene

Once in Royal David's City – easy enough for me to play on the piano

We Three Kings – ruined a bit for me by Fred Dagg's parody

We three kings of Orient are
One on a tractor, two in a car
One on a scooter
Tooting his hooter
Following yonder star
Oh, oh
Star of wonder
Star of light
Star of bewdy, she'll be right
Star of glory, that's the story
Following yonder star . ..

Hark the Herald Angels – always good to hear

Away in a Manger – lovely simple tune

The First Noel – not top of the list for me

God Rest You Merry Gentlemen

O Come All Ye Faithful – a serious contender – great crescendo

Mary's Boy Child – lovely

While Shepherd's Watched Their Flocks at Night – not tops either

I completely excluded Christmas songs that are not really carols – like, White Christmas, I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus, Jingle Bells, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Santa Baby etc

So where did I end up…. A dead heat between Mary's Boy Child and O Come All Ye Faithful

What's your favourite Christmas tune?

PS  Most of  the Christmas Carol images seemed to have snow in them – which is odd for me given that it is high summer here in New Zealand – but I finally found one that didn't.

  1. My favorite is Little Drummer Boy and has been my favorite from childhood. Next is Mary, Did You Know. It was written by Mark Lowery and someone else whose name I can’t remember.
Sending you a Merry Christmas from Texas!
