Rocamadour
is a wonderful French town which clings onto the edge of a high cliff in the
Upper Quercy region of France. You
wonder how they ever managed to build there.
But they did – way back in the 12th century. Just amazing.
Rocamadour
is a place of pilgrimage and has been from about 1112. Some of the pilgrimages to Rocamadour
involved more than 20,000 people. That's
a lot of people in the 16th century. Many of the pilgrims were famous including –
Henry II of England and Simon de Montfort,
A 12th
century wooden statue of Our Lady is in the church.
There are
steps leading up to the Chapel and I understand that in olden times pilgrims
would go up on their knees.
Hi Carole, this town in intriguing - I'll have to look it up and learn more. As always, thanks for sharing your wonderful travel posts. I'm an armchair traveler by preference, and love to hear about others' journeys.
