Domaine des Hauts Loire is a
fancy hotel in the Loire Valley.
Fabulously located for easy visits to the many chateaux of the region. The closest ones include – Amboise,
Chaumont-sur-Loire, Blois, Chenonceau, Chambord and Cheverny. It is also close to the Loire valley wine
route – what's not to love!
The building is a 19th century hunting lodge. The Chateau and grounds were developed by the editor of a French newspaper and his son.
This hotel is part of the Relais & Chateaux group – so we knew it would be fabulous – and it had to be for the price! It was our one big splurge of the trip and I don't regret it at all. The management and staff were very friendly and helpful. They unhesitatingly recommended a nearby restaurant for the first night which turned out to be great quality and value – I will post separately about that.
The room was smallish but well-appointed and decorated with French flair. The safe was ridiculously small and to get to it you had to open the fridge door which is really weird. The bathroom was very nice and large and there was a separate toilet which was also good.
The room had wooden beams but was double height in the middle so you didn't feel squashed.
The grounds of the hotel are extensive and great to walk around – very peaceful. There are 70 hectares of grounds so we didn't see it all.
We had breakfast in the dining room on our last morning. We could have had it out on the terrace but there was a little nip in the air. We had a continental breakfast - which was not served buffet style but involved stuff being brought to your table including a wonderful selection of breads, jams, honey, some fruit, home made yoghurt and a little dish each of Iles Flottant – which I always thought was a dessert! Great expresso coffee and juice. Just lovely.
We also had a fabulous dinner in their Michelin starred restaurant which I'll post about separately.
Domaine Des Hauts de Loire is a superb hotel. But it is very, very expensive. A couple of quibbles only – the wi fi was only just ok and required passwords being re-entered quite frequently. As already mentioned the safe in the room was so small it was ridiculous – if you were travelling with a laptop it wouldn't fit – it only just coped with passports and iPads.
