Brian Barratt-Boyes

Brian Barratt-Boyes died on this day in 2006.  He was made famous when he performed the first open heart surgery in 1958. He pioneered the replacement of heart valves.  He had 3 heart operations himself.  This is a link to the obituary that appeared in the UK’s Independent - http://www.independent.co.uk/news/obituaries/sir-brian-barrattboyes-470062.html

A bit like Steve Jobs, it appears he was a high achiever who also may not have been the easiest guy to work for – the obituary describes him as “aggressive, autocratic, patriarchal and tough. “ – pretty strong stuff in a world where nothing bad is usually said about someone who has just died!
