Happy Bird-day - Red-necked Grebe

Today I bring you Audubon's illustration of the Red-necked Grebe.  This is a migratory aquatic bird.  During the winter it is grey but changes to this vibrant colour during breeding season – like putting on its Sunday best.

It’s a good swimmer and responds to danger by diving down into the water rather than flying.
