State of the Month – Maryland




Here is the 20th  instalment of my monthly feature going through the States of the United States in alphabetical order to check out how they got named, what their flag is like and other things of interest.

Maryland is one of the original 13 Colonies. Maryland is not large geographically but is densely populated.  It's about the same size as Belgium.


Location – Maryland borders 4 other states – Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware – and Washington DC.  The State is almost bisected by Chesapeake Bay

Origin of name – named after Henrietta Maria (Queen of Charles I)

Nicknames – Old Line State, Free State

Bird – Baltimore Oriole
