Hunger: A Memoir of (my) Body by Roxane Gay

Ok, I'd be lying if I told you Hunger was an easy read – well, actually it is in the sense of being straightforward language, short chapters and lots of white space.  But what isn't easy is the content.

The author is one very brave woman.  She has tried to explain how her body came to be like it is (very big) without romanticising what happened or diminishing it in any way.

Anyone who carries a bit of weight should read this book. It is an eye opener and may well change the way you view the subject.  Anyone who knows someone big should also read this book.  And doctors should be made to read this book.

Before reading this book I have to admit having watched The Biggest Loser sometimes – my views on that have changed as well now.

This is a brave book – and I feel for Roxane Gay as she deals with the fallout.  She has copped flak both from the big is beautiful camp and the thinnies camp.

You now have my full permission to tell me off if I ever go anywhere near fat shaming, either of myself or anyone else!

  1. Thanks for the review of this book!! I am a huge Roxane Gay fan, but have yet to read this book. I saw Roxane Gay speak earlier this year at The Bay Area Book Festival in June... She's a phenomenal speaker and spoke at two different talks.... One of which touched on women writng about their bodies.

  3. I think this would be a hard read for me, but I'm intrigued, and it would likely be helpful and therapeutic as well.
    Thanks for the review.

  4. So far, the only book I've read by Roxanne Gay is Bad Feminist, because the others intimidate me too much. They all sound like they're amazing, worthwhile reads, but so hard.
