I Shot the Sheriff

I shot the sheriff, but I did not shoot the deputy
I shot the sheriff, but I did not shoot the deputy

All around in my home town
They're trying to track me down
They say they want to bring me in guilty
For the killing of a deputy
For the life of a deputy, but I say

I shot the sheriff, but I swear it was in self-defense
I shot the sheriff, and they say it is a capital offense

Now I'm not a big Bob Marley fan but this is one song of his that I liked – not too sure exactly why.  It came out in 1973.  Eric Clapton did a cover and maybe that's how I came to know the song.  The song probably was intended to have a political message but I just liked it musically.

You can see an Eric Clapton version in this YouTube clip.

  1. I did not care for this song, but my husband likes it. I never quite go the entire meaning of the song.

  2. I have long liked this song too, catchy tune by Bob Marley.
