Canadian province – New Brunswick

This is part of a series going through the 10 Provinces of Canada in alphabetical order to check out how they got named, what their flag is like and other things of interest. 

Location – New Brunswick is a maritime Province.  It does have a border with Maine.

There is a New Brunswick in New Jersey – this is not the province!  New Brunswick is one of the 4 original Provinces of Canada.

Origin of name – New Brunswick was originally called New Ireland. King George the 3nd renamed it.  The province is named after a city in Lower Saxony, Germany (which he ruled in his position as Elector of Hanover).

Languages – New Brunswick is officially bilingual – French and English.

Nicknames – The Picture Province, The Loyalist Province


Capital – Fredericton

Flower – Purple Violet

Bird – Black capped chickadee

Inventions – apparently sardine cans and snow blowers were both invented in New Brunswick

Signature foods – Grilled oysters, Lobster rolls

Famous places to visit – Saint John, Hartland (longest covered bridge in the world), the Flowerpot rocks, Squaw's Cap Lookout

Famous people from New Brunswick – Bonar Law (became British PM), Harrison & Wallace McCain (McCain Foods)
