Canadian province - British Columbia



This is the second of an occasional series going through the 10 Provinces of Canada in alphabetical order to check out how they got named, what their flag is like and other things of interest. 


Location – British Columbia is the westernmost Province of Canada.  It has borders also with Alaska, Washington, Idaho and Montana.

Origin of name – the name was chosen by Queen Victoria, herself and related to the existing Columbia River.

Nicknames – Beautiful British Columbia, The Pacific Province

Capital – Victoria – named for Queen Victoria but the largest city in British Columbia is Vancouver


Flower – Pacific Dogwood


Tree – Western Red Cedar


Signature foods – Nanaimo Bars


Famous places to visit – Whistler, Stanley Park, Emerald Lake

Famous businesses/brands – BC Hydro


Famous people from British Columbia – Michael Buble, Pamela Anderson, Raymond Burr (Perry Mason, anyone?), Diana Krall, Joni Mitchell

  2. British Columbia is well worth the visit!! We must make mention of the Okanagan Valley in the southern interior. It is not to be missed. As for famous people you did not mention Michael J. Fox, or Susan and Terri Jacks of the Poppy Family!!
