State of the Month – Connecticut

Here is the next instalment of my monthly feature going through the States of the United States in alphabetical order to check out how they got named, what their flag is like and other things of interest.  It would be great if you shared other info/comments about the State with us via a comment.

Location – Connecticut is the southernmost of the states that make up the area known as New England.

Pronunciation:  The second c is silent – no wonder non- English speakers get confused!

Nicknames – Constitution State, Nutmeg State

Flag

Capital – Hartford.  The very first car insurance policy issued in the States was issued here in 1898

Flower – Mountain Laurel

Signature foods – New Haven style Pizza (apizza), Subway started in the State!, Oysters

You'll find Yale University in Connecticut – it was the place where the first medical diploma was issued in the States

You will also find Mystic Seaport which is the largest Maritime Museum in the world apparently.

Famous people from Connecticut – Both President Bushes, Richard and Karen Carpenter, Katherine Hepburn, Radar O'Reilly (Gary Burghoff), Paul Newman and Meat Loaf
