State of the Month - Arkansas

Here is the next instalment of my monthly feature going through the States of the United States in alphabetical order to check out how they got named, what their flag is like and other things of interest.  It would be great if you shared other info/comments about the State with us via a comment.

About 3 million people live in the State.  The State is often regarded as a hillbilly state – whatever that means!  One of the largest company's in the world Wal-Mart is headquartered in Arkansas.  Maybelline's factory is based in the State, too.

More than half the state is covered in forest including the Ozark National Forest (more than one million acres of it!)

Location – Louisiana is to the south, Texas to the south-west, Oklahoma to the west and Missouri to the north.

Pronunciation: The state is pronounced Ar-kan-saw (who knows why) – this pronunciation was mandated by statute in 1881

Nicknames – the Natural State

Flag

State Seal

Capital – the fabulously Flintstonish name – Little Rock

Flower – Apple Blossom (from 1901)

State Fruit – Avocado

Signature foods – Fried Pickles, Chocolate Gravy, Watermelon, Sugared Rice

Famous people born in Arkansas – President Bill Clinton, General Douglas McArthur, John Grisham, Glen Campbell, Johnny Cash

  2. Hi Carole, Thanks for featuring my beautiful state! Much of the land that is not forest is farmland. Our farmers grow a lot of soybeans and rice, among other crops. I grew up on a dairy farm in the northern part of the state. I believe our state fruit/vegetable is the pink tomato. I'm going to enjoy seeing all your state posts.

  3. I knew you would have something for me to learn here! I traveled through Arkansas once, many many years ago.
Three of their signature foods are quite interesting, and not something I find in Wisconsin!

  4. Helloooooo! Waving to you from Cherokee Village, Arkansas.

I'm not FROM here, I've been here for 3 years taking care of my elderly mother.

It is truly a very beautiful state, for those of us who love outdoor sports, like hiking and anything to do with lakes or rivers. :-)
