State of the Month - Alaska

Here is the next instalment of my new monthly feature going through the States of the United States in alphabetical order to check out how they got named, what their flag is like and other things of interest.  It would be great if you shared other info/comments about the state with us via a comment.

Nickname – The Last Frontier

Flag – designed by a 13 year old in 1926

State Seal

Capital – Juneau

Flower – Forget-me-not - so pretty!

State Sport – dog mushing

Mountain – Mt McKinley – highest point in the USA

Largest State by area, purchased from Russia in 1867 for about 2 cents an acre.  Twice as large as Texas.  Became a state in 1959.  The state has 20 indigenous languages.  Russia is as close as under 3 miles away to one part of Alaska.

The Aleutian Islands are part of the state and were invaded by Japan in 1943.

Famous people born in Alaska – Sarah Palin (well known internationally, no comment on her politics intended)
