The Bookworm by Carl Spitzweg

Spitzweg was a German painter.  He did this painting in about 1850.  I just love this image of the somewhat elderly man way up on a ladder in a lovely library engrossed in a book.  It's fabulous that he has another book between his knees and under his arm.  Judging by how close he is holding that book to his face, he needed to get glasses!

The painter painted 3 versions of this work – one can be found in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
