I have usually torn my lettuce rather than cut it but
after doing a bit of research I have to accept that it makes no
difference. The edges of the lettuce do
not go brown faster when cut. So this
does seem truly to be a food myth.
Watch out lettuce, I'm going to be coming after you
with my trusty knives now! And no, it
won't be a non-metallic knife either.
This is interesting. Catherine
ReplyDeleteI think it is a myth. I chop my lettuce with a metal knife all the time and it is fine.
ReplyDeleteCarole, I remember reading the same thing about tearing lettuce, many years ago. However, I chopped lettuce all the time, before I switched to baby spinach salads. :)
ReplyDeleteHave always cut my I have never thought of it one way or the other...because I never torn my.
ReplyDeleteI do both, but I do like the pieces you get by cutting better than tearing. It makes the salad easier to eat.
ReplyDeleteOh good - I've always cut my lettuce despite knowing I shouldn't :) I do, however, tear my basil. Did you read anything about that one?
ReplyDeleteInteresting! I have a special plastic knife that I use for my lettuce, but maybe that is an extra gadget I can clear out? Will try with a regular knife next time!
ReplyDeletei enjoy cutting my lettuce fine and do not find an issue. The only reason to use a non metallic knife is the sharpness, I find
ReplyDeleteI always tear lettuce not because I've heard or learnt that it should be done like that, I just like doing it with my handss and hearing the crunch I make by doing so.
