Salisbury Cathedral

Salisbury Cathedral West Front

It's quite a long time since I visited Salisbury Cathedral and I would love to go there again.

This pic is of the West Front.  Apparently the cathedral has 365 windows – one for each day of the year.

Salisbury Cathedral is in Salisbury – funny that!  Salisbury is in the county of Wiltshire in England.

Salisbury Cathedral from North EAst

The cathedral was built really quickly in comparison to other cathedrals – it took 38 years from 1220 to 1258.  And then in the 1330's the tower and the spire were added to it.  The spire is the tallest medieval structure in the world.

The Chapter House in the Cathedral has the best preserved original Magna Carta – 13 originals were made and only 4 survive today.  The Magna Carta dates back to 1215 and effectively established the rule of law in England.

Cloisters Salisbury Cathedral

The cloisters in the cathedral are the largest in England.

Clock Salisbury Cathedral

The cathedral also contains Europe's oldest working clock – made in 1386 – it has ticked more than 5 million times!  It doesn't have a clock face because it used bells to mark the passing of the time.

Salisbury Cathedral by Constable

Finally, Salisbury Cathedral was the subject of one of Constable's most famous paintings.

  1. Salisbury Cathedral is beautiful - I live about 30 miles away. However I cannot enjoy the Constable image - once foolishly tried to do a jigsaw of it, and it was close to impossible!
