Motuihe Island is a very small
recreational island in the Waitemata Harbour, one of Auckland's two
harbours. Generations of Auckland
children, including myself, went on the ferry to Motuihe to have school or
church picnics.
Motuihe
has 2 beaches – one on each side of the island – so one of the beaches will be
sheltered even if the other one isn't.
And it takes less than 10 minutes to walk from one beach to the other.
Lots
of boaties also anchor up at Motuihe to swim, picnic etc. Even quite large gin palaces as well as the
more modest fizz boats.
Fantastic!
PS in checking up for writing this post, I discovered that I have always previously spelled Motuihe wrong! Motu means "island" in Maori.
What a gorgeous little island! I had never heard of it but would love to be laying out on the shady beach right now!
