Capital city of the week - Cairo

Cairo is an old city.  It was founded in 969AD – how they know it was that precise year is anyone's guess!

As a girl I once stayed in the Shepheard's Hotel in Cairo and was stunned that they had a full orchestra playing in the dining room – at breakfast time!  Just goes to show how old I'm getting.

Cairo is sited in a river delta.

The British invaded Cairo in 1882 and it remained in their control until 1922.
