Bagnoles de L'Orne - a surprising town in Normandy, France

On a day trip out of Haute Normandy we came across this city in the Orne district– which was quite unexpected and different from other villages/towns in the area.

Casino - Bagnoles de L'Orne
It is very much a spa resort town with a casino.  It is famous for its hydrotherapic baths which are supposed to heal all sorts of things.  It was at its height of fashion in the 1920's.  Many people still visit the spa today.  The season is April through October.

The origins of the spa go back to the middle ages. This is part of the land of Arthurian legend – Lancelot country.

The Lake at Bagnoles de L'Orne

The lake is formed by the River Vée.

  1. Gorgeous! I've been to Normandy but not to this town. Love the castle picture.
