The
novelist Georgette Heyer died on this day in 1974. I loved reading her Regency Romances as a
girl and still find myself dipping into one if I need a quick pick me up. I think she was an absolute master of the
genre. Well written, witty, good
characterisation, very well researched and absolutely G rated.
I
have read a couple of her detective novels but they don't resonate quite as
much with me. I have all 33 of her
Regency works. Her works were, and are,
immensely popular – and of course, the critics turned their nose up at them.
You have quite a collection.

I have not read anything by this author yet, although over the last couple of years I have read a few regencies.

I think I have probably read every one of them - oh how I loved them when I was a teenager. I kept a couple of them, my absolute favourites, and take them down off the shelf every now and again - The Corinthian, These Old Shades, Unknown Ajax. Thanks for reminding me of them - must be time I featured one on my blog...I did one of the detective stories a while back.
ReplyDeleteCarol, you left a comment on my review of The Toll Gate by Georgette Heyer at the Silk Screen Views blog. Thank you. I love her romances and own all of them. I re-read them occasionally, especially when I need a mood fix, but like you, I don't consider her mysteries on the same level of quality.
ReplyDeleteI don't think The Toll Gate is my absolute favorite, but many other Heyer's romances definitely are. My reviews of some of them will appear on the blog some time later.
